Soviet firefighters responding to a call from the US Embassy in Moscow on March 28, 1991. A fire tore through a secure section, forced the evacuation of hundreds of employees and demolished the roof. No one was seriously injured. US officials were on alert to monitor the firemen after a similar fire in 1977 “seriously compromised” embassy security, according to a New York Times article at the time.
